How would you describe your business?
I create mixed media paintings of various subject matter, but with a distinct style focused on the interplay of color and texture. My goods include small original paintings and other applications of my art, such as prints, greeting cards, and tea tins.
How did you get into your trade?
Art has always been a passion of mine. However, I decided to take the more "practical" route and studied Graphic Design at Chico State, where I received my BA in Communications. After that, I worked as a Graphic Designer for six years. But new adventures were calling and I was blessed with the opportunity to teach conversational English to college students in Tibet. One day, in my tiny teacher’s apartment, I gathered up the art supplies on hand as a way to make it through an emotionally trying day. What emerged on canvas from that struggle was beautiful and satisfying. So began my love for mixed media painting.
Working as a maker on the Central Coast can be hard, expensive, and risky. Why do you do it?
When given the time (however much or little) and space to create, I'm a more enjoyable wife, mother, and human being! Painting energizes me—not only the creative process, but the putting art out into the world part. I love it. And I can't imagine not doing it.
